The technical fixes that move rankings fastest
Before writing a single blog post, these foundations decide how far content can travel.
Most SEO engagements start with a content calendar. That is usually the second thing to do. If search engines cannot crawl the site properly, or the pages take four seconds to render on a mid-range Android phone, content is being poured into a leaking container.
Can it be found at all
Before anything else, confirm the basics are not quietly broken. We have found all of these on live, actively marketed sites:
- A stray noindex tag left over from a staging build
- robots.txt blocking a directory that contains the money pages
- Both www and non-www serving the same content with no canonical
- Important pages with no internal links pointing at them
- A sitemap listing URLs that redirect or no longer exist
None of these are interesting problems. All of them cap everything downstream.
Speed, measured on the right device
In India most of your traffic is mobile, often on a mid-range handset and an inconsistent connection. Testing on a desktop over office wifi tells you almost nothing about what your customer experiences.
The fixes that pay off most reliably are unglamorous: compress and correctly size images, stop loading fonts and scripts that block the first paint, defer anything not needed for the initial view, and reserve space for elements so the layout does not jump while loading.
One page, one job
A page that tries to rank for six things usually ranks for none. Each page should answer one query clearly, in a structure a search engine can follow: one H1 that states the subject, H2s that break it into real sections, and body text that actually answers the question rather than circling it.
If a page cannot be summarised in one sentence, it is probably two pages.
Local, if you sell locally
For a business serving a city, the Google Business Profile often drives more qualified enquiries than the website. Complete it properly, keep the name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear, and treat reviews as an ongoing operation rather than a one-time push.
Consistency matters more than volume here. Three variations of your address across directories does measurable damage.
Structured data, used honestly
Marking up your organisation, services and articles helps search engines understand what they are looking at. It is worth doing and takes an afternoon.
What is not worth doing is marking up reviews or ratings you do not have. That is a manual-action risk for a cosmetic gain, and we have seen sites lose visibility over it.
Then write
Once the foundation holds, content compounds. Before that, it mostly just accumulates.
